A binary adder is a digital circuit that adds two binary numbers. The output of the adder is the sum of the two input numbers. The 4-bit binary adder is the most basic type of adder and is used in many digital circuits. The 4-bit binary adder can be constructed using a combination of logic gates. The logic gates used in the 4-bit binary adder are AND gates, OR gates, and XOR gates. The outputs of the adder are S, the sum of the two input numbers, and Carry-out (Co). The operation of the 4-bit binary adder can be explained as follows. 1. The two input bits, A and B, are ANDed with the Carry-in (Ci) to produce the outputs of the first stage of the adder. 2. The outputs of the first stage are XORed together to produce the Sum (S) output of the adder. 3. The Carry-out (Co) output of the adder is the OR of the Carry-in (Ci) and the carry from the first stage of the adder. The IC 7483 is a quad 2-bit binary adder. The IC 7483 can be used to construct a 4-bit binary adder by connecting four IC 7483s in cascade. The circuit diagram for the 4-bit binary adder using the IC 7483 is shown below. 4 bit binary adder using 7483 The 4-bit binary adder using the IC 7483 works in the same way as the 4-bit binary adder constructed using logic gates. The only difference is that the IC 7483 performs the addition operation in two stages. The first stage of the IC 7483 adds the two input bits, A and B, to produce the outputs of the first stage, S1 and Co1. The second stage of the IC 7483 adds the Carry-in (Ci) to the carry from the first stage, Co1, to produce the Sum (S) output of the adder and the Carry-out (Co) output of the adder.
